More funnies

So we had a joint worship, grades K-8 this week, and the pastor talked about creation. He asked quite a few of questions, but two garnered "extra special" responses.

Pastor: "On the 4th day, what did God create on the land?"
Student: "Fish"

Pastor: "We breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide. Who breaths in carbon dioxide?"
Student: "Jesus"

Oh, the things they say

It's been a while, I know...

So today I passed out a math placement test to my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students--need to find out what textbook they get. I tried to avoid mentioning the "T" word, but eventually it came out. Perhaps that was my bad. After passing the "tests" out, one girl raised her hand and walked up to my desk. "Mr. Hill," she said boldly, with a smile. "We haven't prepared for this test."

Wow. I hope you have. I hope you've been preparing since your first math class a few years ago, or even before that at home.

This could be a long year...

Essay Contest

For those who don't frequent Starbucks, or those who don't pay attention when they do, there's an essay contest for kids 8-12. "In 100 words or less, your child can write a poem, essay or short story about what he or she would do to make our world a better place to live."

Enter your child's submission here.

What is education, really?

I got to reading the "The Way I See It" comment on the side of my Starbucks cup yesterday (it was decaf, thank you), and realized that I could do better than whoever came up with the quippy phrase that graced the side of my latte. So here goes...the way I see it:

Education should be neither the filling of a bucket, nor the lighting of a fire. Rather, true education is that which teaches to distinguish what should go in the bucket, from what should go in the fire.

Do I deserve a Starbuck's cup or what?

Yet another blog

I wanted to let everyone know that I'm working on another blog right now as well. A few schools in Michigan have decided to work together on creating a place where our students can post writing, read what others have written, and receive feedback. You can find this project at:
